Why Travel with Your Dog in India?

Growing Pet-Friendly Travel Options

In recent years, India has seen a surge in pet-friendly travel options. More hotels, resorts and tourist spots are opening their doors to pets. Cities like Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi now feature a growing number of pet-friendly accommodations and restaurants.

Even popular tourist destinations such as Goa and the hill stations of Himachal Pradesh are becoming more welcoming to pets. With the availability of pet-friendly travel facilities, it’s easier than ever to take your dog along for the journey.

Enhancing The Relationship Between You And Your Dog

There is more to leaving with your dog than changing environments with the pet. It deepens the existing bond and brings new experiences for the dog. Every trip whether adventuring to new locations or just staying in a different environment is beneficial to both parties emotionally.

Most of the pet owners normally report that making trips along with dogs decreases stress levels and helps uplift the general health of an individual while at the same time creating perfect pictures in their minds. It’s not about going for a trip only but it’s more about why it makes sense to take that journey with your canine buddy.

Air, Rail and Road: Popular Means of Transport

The Indian travel scenario is very pet friendly. Flying is often the most effective mode of transport especially for long-haul destinations and more and more airlines permit dogs in the cabin or enables dogs to fly as cargo. However, many people in North America still prefer to drive to their destination instead of taking an airplane.

There are also many advantages of driving such as taking sightseeing breaks, taking care that the pet is comfortable and also covering more areas. Additionally, travelling by train is another option for those looking for a slower, scenic journey with their dogs.

The Indian Railways has started offering pet-friendly travel options, especially on specific trains and routes. Whether you choose air, rail or road, each mode of transport has unique benefits for you and your dog.

A Guide to the Pet Travel Rules

Every mode of transport offered in India for pet owners comes with certain rules which must be respected by the pet owners. If it is air traveling or train or cars there are rules that aim at the comfort and safety of the pets included in the journey.

The first example suggests that there are severe restrictions on the types of pet containers that can be transported on an airplane. On the other hand, Indian Railaways places strict regulators, which prescribe that all pets be confined in specific compartments.

However, road transport is a bit more convenient, as it allows a more flexible transport of the pet, although there are still arrangements to be made to protect the pet. These limitations are often very annoying when imposed on the traveller at the last moment.

Papers and Medical Examinations

Before taking a trip with your dog, there are health documents that are a must-have. Many airlines and transport services do not allow the carriage of animals without a valid vaccination certificate that shows that the pet animal has been vaccinated for the relevant diseases. For some international travel, you may be required to have an Import/Export Permit from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Additionally, a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian is typically required, confirming that your pet is fit to travel. This certificate should ideally be issued within 7-10 days before travel. It’s also important to ensure your pet has a microchip or proper identification tags, as per regulations set by the airline or travel authority.

Age, Breed and Size Restrictions

Different transport modes in India have specific age, breed and size restrictions for pets travelling. Airlines, for example, generally allow pets up to a certain size (usually around 7 kg including the carrier) to travel in the cabin. Larger pets may need to travel as cargo in special conditions.

Some airlines impose breed restrictions, especially for certain dog breeds that are considered “dangerous” or have breathing issues (such as Bulldogs and Pugs). Indian Railways typically allows pets to travel in designated compartments, but there are restrictions on the number of pets and their size.

For road trips, size and breed restrictions are minimal, but the pet must be comfortable and safe in the vehicle. Always check the specific regulations of your chosen mode of transport to ensure your dog meets the required criteria for travel.

Pet Policy for Travel by Air in India

Airlines’ Pet Travel Policies

When travelling by air in India, different airlines have their own policies for pets, so it’s essential to check the specific rules of the airline you’re flying with. Major airlines such as Air India, Indigo and SpiceJet each offer pet travel services, but the details vary:

  • Air India allows pets in the cabin for small dogs and cats that meet the airline’s size and weight restrictions (usually under 7 kg including the carrier). Larger pets must travel as cargo.
  • Indigo Airlines permits pets in the cabin only on domestic flights. The pet, including the carrier, should not exceed 7 kg. For heavier pets, they are transported in the cargo hold.
  • SpiceJet has similar policies, allowing pets in the cabin if they are small enough to fit in a carrier under the seat. Pets that do not meet the size limit must travel as cargo.

Requirements for Traveling with Pets Airlines

  1. Your pet dog/cat should be at least 8 weeks old to be allowed for travel. Traveling is not permitted for pets that are pregnant.
  1. There is a restriction of two pets traveling in the cabin on the same flight where they are seated at the rear of both Business Class and Economy Class. Travelers must be in possession of their pets.
  1. Puppies and dogs must be restrained using leashes or muzzles.
  1. No pet or assistance animal shall occupy a passenger seat. Once again, at the owner’s choice, pets are taken on board and the cage of batteries in this case is not included in the liability of the airline if the pet is not boarded.
  1. Along with pet passport of the animals, other health certificate as well as vaccination record must also be provided.
  1. The owner of a pet will undertake all responsibilities. This includes obeying all local laws and government policies including health and safety processes.
  1. Every pet owner must sign an indemnity agreement when traveling with a pet and will take risks associated with any possible injury, illness or death of the pet before the trip.
  1. Pets carried on a plane will incur charges not covered in the free baggage and will be counted as extra baggage. In case of pets traveling within the countries of India, a normal excess charge on baggage will apply except for the container weight, pet’s weight and food inside the crate.

Carrying Pets in the Cabin vs. Cargo Hold

Pets can either travel in the cabin or the cargo hold, depending on their size and the airline’s policy. In-cabin travel is the preferred choice for many dog owners because it allows you to keep your pet close during the flight. However, this option is only available for smaller pets that fit in an approved carrier that can be placed under the seat in front of you.

For larger pets or those not meeting the weight and size restrictions, cargo travel is the alternative. This typically involves your pet travelling in a pressurized, temperature-controlled area of the aircraft, separate from passengers. While safe, cargo travel can be stressful for pets, so it’s important to ensure that your pet is comfortable and that the airline has the necessary facilities.

Adjustment of Pet Carrier Size

When you are carrying your pet inside the cabin, the soft bag/carrier is 18” x 18” x 12” (Length x Width x Height) and in weight for in cabin pet carrier, the pet may not exceed 5 Kg within the carrier however.

All pets who surpass these limitations cannot fly within the cabin and must instead travel as freight within the pet’s container. All pets carried in the hold Approved IATA relevant standards for pet containers must be adhered to. Disallowing a pet in the crate but with an attached label indicating the type of pet that is inside the crate. In addition, a moisture absorbent mat should be fixed inside the crate.

Pet Travelling additional charges

Containers designated for pets will, nevertheless, be liable to standard excess baggage charges by way/piece, irrespective of the fact that the free baggage allowance is not utilized. Also, the above provision shall not apply to the free baggage allowance in regard to carriage of pets containers or carriers.

Where applicable, excess baggage charge shall be calculated based on the following:

  • Pet weight
  • Weight of the pet’s container that may include the kennel, cage or pet bag.
  • Other items accompanying the pet, such as food.

Booking and Additional Charges

Booking your pet’s flight can usually be done at the same time as your own. Airlines typically require a separate booking for pets and you should inform them at least 48 hours before departure. Charges for pet travel depend on the airline, the pet’s size and whether they are travelling in the cabin or as cargo.

On average, domestic flights in India may charge anywhere from ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 for pets travelling in the cabin. Once again, cargo charges are expensive usually between ₹6,000 and ₹20,000 and over depending on the destination.

Health certificates and these papers are also requisite

If you would like your dog to travel without any hitches, you should present correct health certificates endorsed by a qualified veterinary doctor. These certificates must state that your pet is fit to fly, free of contagious diseases and up-to-date with vaccinations, including rabies.

You will also need to carry a vaccination record and possibly an Import/Export permit (for international travel). Additionally, a microchip or proper identification tags are often required to help identify your pet if needed.

Safety Tips for Flying with Your Dog

Flying with your dog can be stressful, but a few simple steps can help make the experience safer and more comfortable:

  • Choose the right carrier: The carrier should be well-ventilated, large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably. It should also be strong enough to withstand handling.
  • Get your pet used to the carrier: Prior to the flight, allow your dog to spend time in the carrier to reduce anxiety.
  • Avoid feeding your dog right before the flight: A light meal 4-6 hours before travel is best to prevent nausea.
  • Keep your dog hydrated: Ensure your pet has access to water during the journey, particularly on longer flights.
  • Consult the vet: Speak to your veterinarian about your dog’s fitness for air travel and any anxiety-reducing measures, such as sedatives (only if recommended by the vet).

What are the steps for booking a pet?

  1. For making a booking, bring your pet along with the appropriate travel case and documentation to the check-in desk, where you can perform some ticketing functions.
  1. You can even book your pet in our airline or city ticketing agencies.
  1. In case you want to carry pets in cabin, please ensure that the flight is booked not less than 72 hours before the flights departure. We do not offer additional segments of service from a multi-city reservation when traveling with a pet passenger.

Pet Policy to Travel with Dogs by Train in India

A Brief Travel Guide to Pet Travel Schemes Offered by Indian Railways

Travelling in trains with pets is permitted by Indian Railways, though certain rules and guidelines have to be adhered to. Generally, most pets are confined to travelling only in certain classes and for those journeys, bookings must be made in advance.

Indian Railways requires that pets travel in a separate designated space, usually in the luggage van or specific compartments, depending on the train type and route. It’s crucial to book your pet’s travel ahead of time, as pet-friendly seats or compartments are limited.

Types of Trains that Allow Pets and Pet-Friendly Cabins

Not all trains allow pets, so it’s important to know which ones are pet-friendly. Superfast Express trains and Rajdhani Express generally do not permit pets, but trains like the Shatabdi Express or other specific Mail/Express trains do have provisions for pet travel. Some trains offer pet-friendly first-class compartments or dedicated pet cabins, but these are limited. If there are no pet-friendly cabins available, your dog will have to travel in the luggage van and a special pet ticket will need to be booked. Always check with the specific railway station or online booking platform for available options.

Rules for Travelling with Dogs on Trains

Indian Railways has several rules to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet while travelling:

  • Crate Size: Pets must be kept in a well-ventilated crate or cage. The crate should be large enough for the dog to stand, sit and turn around comfortably. The dimensions of the crate must comply with railway guidelines.
  • Ticket Booking: A separate ticket must be booked for your pet. It is usually issued for the luggage compartment or special pet cabins. The fare for a pet ticket varies, but it is generally lower than that of a human passenger’s ticket.
  • Leash and Safety: Your dog must be kept on a leash when not inside the carrier. If your pet is travelling in a dedicated cabin or compartment, it should be kept under control at all times to ensure the safety of both your pet and fellow passengers.

Required Documents for Pet Travel

Given that you will be traveling with your dog, you will also have to prepare the following documents before boarding:

  • Health Certificate: A dated health certificate from a licensed veterinarian is a must saying that you dog is healthy for travel and there are no communicable diseases evident. This should be dated a week or less before the date of travel.
  • Vaccination Records: There are several vaccinations that your animal must also have including rabies. Do not forget to take a copy of the vaccination certificate with you to prevent tsa complications at the boarding or check in.

Safety and Comfort Tips for Pet Travel on Trains

Travelling by train can be an enjoyable experience for both you and your dog, but it requires a little preparation to ensure their safety and comfort:

  • Prepare in Advance: Ensure that your pet is familiar with the crate well in advance of the journey. This will help reduce anxiety during travel.
  • Pack Essentials: Bring along your dog’s favorite blanket or bedding to make them feel more comfortable in the crate. Also, pack food, water and a bowl for hydration.
  • Avoid Feeding Before Travel: To prevent travel sickness, avoid feeding your pet a large meal right before the journey. A light snack a few hours before departure is ideal.
  • Comfort Breaks: Plan ahead to ensure your pet has a chance to stretch their legs during long journeys. Indian Railways may not offer stops for pets, so bring along an extra leash for quick potty breaks at designated stations, if allowed.
  • Calm Your Pet: Keep your dog calm during the journey by talking to them gently and ensuring their crate is in a quiet area away from loud noises or crowds.

By adhering to these suggestions and guidelines, it is possible to make your dog’s train travel in India comfortable and free from any kind of stress.

Booking the train tickets

  1. Always book your tickets in advance

With Indian Railways catering to millions of passengers on a daily basis, one can envisage the terrible crowds inside the trains such that in most cases, getting a confirmed ticket is far-fetched especially for the upper classes.

It is also possible to travel with your pets only in the long distance trains if one books First Class or 1A Class Tickets. However, since there is only one or two 1A coaches in the whole train, availability of those tickets is also very limited.

Given that, here are the steps how to book the train tickets.

  1. Always confirm the availability of First Class Coach in the train you wish to book

There are trains that lack a first class coach. If the particular route you are traveling on does not have a train with a First Class Coach with your dogs, sorry you can not bring your dogs in that train.

  1. Purchase reservations in advance to ensure a seat is available

Therefore, try to book as fast as you can. Around a month to 20 days prior to the date of travel, it’s possible to get a confirmed ticket but even in case of getting released on waitlist say WL 5 the chances of clearing the waitlist is higher. Probabilities of having your WL cleared are given in % by apps like ConfirmTkt.

While booking the tickets this Indian Railway reservation system displayed WL numbers of 4 and 5 priced at waitlist confirmation odds of 77%, all the tickets were confirmed around 1 week before the journey date.

  1. At least 2 train ticket reservations require to be done

The passengers can travel together with their dogs in the first class compartment, however, for a coupe (a two–person) or a cabin (4 seats) needs to be secured only if other occupants in the cabin unlike you are not traveling. It’s a must to purchase a minimum of two tickets in order to avail a cabin or jet a coupe.

When making a ticket reservation via the IRCTC site, select the ‘Coupe’ option available under TLC preferences.

In case there are 3-4 members, they will automatically be given a cabin for four-seater arrangement. For booking a single ticket, there is also no guarantee that you will have a coupe and mostly if the other occupants of the cabin are not with you, the pet will be not allowed to board in a cabin.

You have booked your tickets, you can relax. They are confirmed perfect. Otherwise, you chill and wait for the turn by frequently checking how far have you reached with your PNR. Please note that you bear no cost, barring processing fees, when cancelling a waitlisted ticket 48 hours prior to the train departure.

This includes cancelling a confirmed ticket 48 hours prior to departure if required. As the dates get nearer, the WL is expected to rise.

Travel Ideas For Train Journey With Dogs Without Booking The AC first class cabin or coupe

The canine will be on the train, only in a different compartment. The dog shall be put in the train guard van and billed with other cargo in the care of the train guard.

  1. Go to the station a few hours before the journey. This can work even if the train doesn’t originate from that station. Book a ‘luggage ticket’ for your pet. Your pet dog will be put on the weighing scale and a luggage ticket will be issued corresponding to its weight.

The charges depending on distance and weight. We all paid Rs. 250 for journey which lasted for ten hours. Click to know parcel rates in India

  1. On the train, the dog will need to be placed in a ‘dog box’ compartmentalized section with cage for the dog and its luggage alone in the attenuation van where only one dog box and a guard is present.

Passengers will not be allowed to enter the Brake Van. But people can keep “visiting” the train, which has the pet in the brake van, as every other coach, “General”, is right next to that van.

  1. There is an option whereby you may reserve any class of ticket for yourself just like an ordinary passenger. Same applies if you want to travel in the General class of the train.
  1. You will only be permitted to take back the dog at the terminus indicated on the ticket and not earlier or later.
  1. This works as an option provided your dog is able to spend the entire duration of the train ride in a cage. On longer halts, the van guard may allow or may not allow you to take the dog out for a walk.

Cost Involved When Traveling on the Train with Dogs

Although the train seems to be the least expensive mode of transport for pet owners considering the alternative strategies of going by road or boarding a pet-friendly airline, it still has its other costs and therefore should be considered when making the trip.

  1. Cost of train tickets: First class air tickets in trains are in the range of Rs. 4000-6000 depending on the distance and class of the train.

For example, a first class airfare ticket from Bangalore to New Delhi in Karnataka Express, a distance of around 2100km wings over Rs. 5500 per ticket.

All in all, a travel for 2 people and 2 dogs in a First Class coach in a train from say Bangalore to New Delhi should cost around Rs. 20,000 in total.

  1. Cost of health certificate: Declaration of fit appropriation contains a cost of Rs. 500-1000 of the dog and based consultant. It cost me Rs 500 per dog.
  1. Cost of a dog luggage ticket: The charges for the luggage ticket is approximately Rs 800-1500 per dog depending on the weight of the dog and the class of the journey. I was charged Rs 1200 per ticket.
  1. Cost of travel to the railway officer: Lastly, I mention this as a cost head because you’ll need to pay cab fare/fuel charges etc when the purpose of that railway station visit is achieved just this. Add another 500 here. No bribes should be given ever!
  1. Railway Station Cabs: Do not forget to include incidental expenses such as getting photocopies made (Rs. 100), hiring coolies (in case you have baggage) and the fare of a cab that will allow you and your dog access to the railway station.

Most of the cabs will, however, not allow carrying a dog and so the best option would be to get an auto rickshaw. Also, some pet cabs have been started in the city so search and book one well ahead of time to avoid rushing. (Unlike us.)

  1. Misc costs: These may include expenses incurred for copying documents, hiring porters, food and drinks during the train journey, gratuities and so on. Consider adding another 500-1000/per person for these.

Pet Policy Travel with Dog by Road in India

Safety Measures for Travelling with a Dog in a Car

When travelling by road with your dog, safety is the top priority. There are several ways to ensure your pet is secure during the journey:

  • Crates and Carriers: The safest way to transport your dog is in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. This prevents your pet from roaming around the vehicle, distracting the driver or being injured in case of sudden stops. The crate should be secured properly in the car to avoid movement during the drive.
  • Seatbelts and Harnesses: If using a crate is not an option, consider a pet seatbelt harness that is designed to keep your dog secure while allowing them some movement. This is especially useful for smaller dogs. Larger dogs can be restrained in the back seat using a dog seatbelt attachment that keeps them in place.
  • Backseat Only: Always have your pet travel in the back seat. This is safer as airbags in the front can be dangerous for pets in the event of an accident.

Long-Distance Travel vs. Short Trips: Precautions to Take

Long-distance road trips require more preparation than shorter trips. Here are some important considerations:

  • For Long-Distance Travel:
    • Plan frequent breaks (every 2-3 hours) to let your dog stretch their legs, hydrate and use the bathroom.
    • Ensure your dog is familiar with the car, especially for longer journeys. In the week or few days before you travel, do a practice journey. This is likely to help ease your anxiety.
    • If your dog has a tendency to get car sick, it may help to ask your vet for anti-nausea drugs.
    • Carry a cooler bag with some food and water for your dog, so that they do not get dehydrated or tired during the trip.
  • For Short- Distance Trips:
    • Regardless of the distance you are traveling with your dog, ensure that your furry friend is well settled. Do not allow them to sit on your lap or wander about in the car. This may cause distractions and may result in accidents.
    • Make sure to carry a portable water bowl and a treat in order to relax and soothe your canine companion.

Pet-Friendly Rest Stops and Accommodations on Highways

On long road trips, it’s important to find pet-friendly rest stops and accommodations. Many highways in India now have designated pet-friendly rest areas, though they may not be abundant. Here are a few tips:

  • Rest Stops: Look for highway cafes or gas stations with outdoor seating, where your dog can stretch and relax. Some rest areas have designated spots for pets to use the bathroom.
  • Pet-Friendly Hotels: Increasingly, hotels and resorts along major highways are becoming pet-friendly, especially in tourist-heavy areas like Goa, Rajasthan and Kerala. Check online platforms like Booking.com or Airbnb for pet-friendly lodging options. Many pet-friendly accommodations provide a separate pet-friendly area for meals and leisure.

Prior to embarking on your journey, it is wise to carry out some investigation on rest areas and lodges on your path to ascertain that there are regions where both you and your furry friend can take a rest comfortably.

Travel Tips for Keeping Your Dog Calm During Road Trips

Road trips are not the best experience for many dogs, particularly for those who have never taken a long distance journey before. Here are a few suggestions to help your dog remain calm and make him feel secure:

  • A Comfortable Setup: Make your dog’s space in the car as comfortable as possible. For instance, you can carry their favorite blanket or their favorite toy as this can bring warmth and a sense of familiarity to them during the trip.
  • Limit Noise: Keep the car quiet by playing calming music or simply driving in silence to avoid startling your dog with loud noises.
  • Avoid Feeding Right Before Travel: A heavy meal right before the trip can make your dog feel uncomfortable, so feed them a light meal a few hours before the journey.
  • Provide Chew Toys: Chew toys or other distractions can help keep your dog entertained and reduce anxiety. This also prevents boredom-related anxiety.
  • Calming Sprays or Supplements: If your dog experiences motion sickness or anxiety, consider using calming sprays or natural remedies like pheromone collars or calming supplements (under advice from your vet).

With the right precautions, travelling by road with your dog can be an enjoyable experience. By planning ahead, ensuring safety and keeping your dog comfortable, you can both have a smooth and stress-free trip.

  • Lost or Stolen Pets: In the unfortunate event that your dog is lost or stolen during travel, some pet travel insurance policies will cover the cost of search efforts, including advertising, reward money and sometimes even travel expenses to help you get your dog back.
  • Trip Cancellation or Delay: If a trip is canceled or delayed due to an emergency related to your pet, such as your dog falling ill before travel, some insurance policies cover the financial loss or additional accommodation expenses.
  • Repatriation Costs: If you are travelling internationally and your dog falls seriously ill or is injured, repatriation coverage ensures that your pet can be safely transported back home.

How to Choose the Best Pet Insurance Provider in India

Choosing the right pet insurance provider for travel requires careful consideration of several factors to ensure comprehensive coverage for your dog. Here’s how you can choose the best plan:

  • Check the Coverage Limits: Ensure that the insurance provides adequate coverage for the situations you are most concerned about—medical emergencies, accidents, lost pets or trip cancellations. Look for a plan that offers high coverage limits, especially for medical and emergency expenses.
  • Compare Different Providers: Different insurance providers offer various plans with different features. Compare their coverage, exclusions, premiums and claims process. Some popular insurance providers in India that offer pet insurance include Bajaj Allianz, HDFC ERGO and New India Assurance.
  • Look for 24/7 Assistance: Certain insurance companies provide all day and all night customer service or hotlines. This is very important for individuals who travel a lot and experiences emergencies. It’s even more critical when travelling abroad.
  • Check for Exclusions and Fine Print: Carefully scrutinize the policy documents to identify all the exclusions. Examples of such are policies where they would exclude coverage for any pre-existing ailments, for certain breeds and so on. Be aware of the waiting times, for instance and the level of any excess or outpatient expenses.
  • Reputation and Reviews: Find out if there are any reviews or other sources of feedback for the insurance company in order to ascertain the ease of claims, if the need arises. An insurance company must not only make it easy for its clients to make claims, but also have a clean history in making payments in respect to claims.
  • Cost of Premiums: Compare the premiums of different providers, but also make sure to balance cost with the coverage offered. Sometimes, cheaper premiums may result in lower coverage or higher deductibles.

When purchasing pet travel insurance, ensure that it covers both the travel-related risks and the health and safety of your dog during the trip. By doing proper research and planning, you can enjoy your journey with your dog, knowing that you are well-prepared for unexpected situations.

Pet Travel Regulations for International Travel (for Indian Dog Owners)

Steps to Take if Travelling Internationally with Your Dog

Travelling internationally with your dog requires meticulous planning and understanding of the regulations in both India and the destination country. Here are the essential steps to follow when preparing for international travel with your pet:

  • Check Airline Policies: Different airlines have different pet travel policies, including restrictions on pet size, type of carrier and travel fees. Some airlines allow pets in the cabin, while others may require them to travel in the cargo hold. Always confirm with the airline about their specific requirements for pet travel.
  • Book Pet Travel in Advance: As pet-friendly spots are limited on flights, especially in the cabin, it’s crucial to book early. This ensures a reserved space for your pet and gives you enough time to complete all the paperwork.
  • Consult Your Veterinarian: Take your dog to the vet for a health check-up well in advance of the trip. Ensure they are fit to travel and up-to-date on vaccinations, as required by the destination country. Discuss any medications your dog may need during the journey and ask about sedatives if your dog is prone to travel anxiety.
  • Pre-book Pet Transportation: If your dog is being positioned in the cargo compartment, it is advisable to reserve the services of a pet transport company especially if this is not offered by the airline. A good pet transport service reassuringly takes care of your pet and makes sure that they also arrive at your location without a hitch.

Know the Pet Import and Export Regulations in Every Country

Different nations possess unique pet importation and exportation policies. It is very important to know the requirements of the country you are traveling to in order not to be caught off guard. Some of the key areas include:

  • Importation Conditions and Licensing: Most of the countries require registration of pets to be allowed to enter the territory or importation licenses to be obtained.

For example, countries like the USA, UK and Australia have strict rules and require that a pet’s arrival be pre-approved with proper documentation.

  • Microchipping: Some countries, such as the UK and EU nations, require pets to be microchipped for identification. Ensure your dog’s microchip meets the destination country’s standards (ISO 11784/11785 standard).
  • Rabies Vaccination and Titer Test: Essential element in the rabies vaccination will be certification while travelling – it is one of the dog travel requirements more relaxed by many countries. Rabies vaccinations for dogs should be done at least 21days prior to travel.

To some countries especially the EU countries and Australia – rabies titer test is also required in addition to the proof of rabies vaccination performed on the pet. The test is a blood test that measures the level of rabies antibodies in the dog’s system.

  • Health Certificates: A health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian is often required. This certificate states that your dog is fit for travel, free of contagious diseases and up-to-date on vaccinations. It must typically be issued within a few days (usually 7-10 days) of travel, so plan accordingly.

Documentation, Quarantine Requirements and Health Checks for Dogs

Before your dog can travel internationally, you need to prepare several documents and be aware of quarantine requirements:

  • Documentation:
    • Health Certificate: This is usually required within 7 days of departure and must be signed by a licensed veterinarian.
    • Vaccination Certificates: Proof of up-to-date vaccinations, especially for rabies, is essential. Countries like the EU, Australia and New Zealand are particularly strict about this.
    • Import Permit: Some countries require an import permit or specific authorization for pets to enter, so check the destination country’s rules in advance.
    • Microchip Certificate: It Proves that your dog’s microchip is registered and matches the standards of the destination country.
  • Quarantine Requirements:

Certain nations impose obligatory quarantine periods after a traveller’s arrival. For example, for pets that do not conform to the import health requirements to the UK, there is a 21-day quarantine requirement.

Australia and New Zealand are infamously known for their robust quarantine measures and therefore should a pet travel there, if all the health and immunization checks are not done, it may spend weeks in quarantine at the destination country.

  • Tip: Check the specific quarantine regulations of the destination country well in advance and, if possible, schedule your travel around the quarantine process to avoid delays.
  • Health Verification For Pets After Arrival: Pets may be subjected to check-ups by the relevant agricultural or customs officers in the country to check their health and vaccination status, among other requirements. If for any reason your dog has not adhered to the presented requirements, entry may be refused or the dog may be placed in quarantine until further notice.

Advice on Traveling with Dogs Across Borders with Ease

  • Get Ready on Time: Getting ready to go overseas with a dog involves meticulous timing. Some paperwork such as rabies titer test may take weeks or even months to be ready, therefore, make sure to begin all preparations several months before the intended day of travel.
  • Travel Agencies for Pets: Consider using pet travel agencies that specialize in navigating the complex paperwork and logistics of international pet travel. They can assist with obtaining permits, arranging transportation and ensuring compliance with destination regulations.
  • Pet Travel Checklist: Create a checklist of all required documents and vaccinations. Double-check each requirement well in advance of your departure to avoid last-minute hassles.
  • Keep Your Dog Calm: International travel can be stressful for dogs. Bring familiar items like toys, blankets and their favorite treats to comfort them during the journey. Talk to your veterinarian about calming aids or medications to help your dog stay calm, especially if flying long distances.

Travelling internationally with your dog is entirely possible, but it does require a thorough understanding of the legal and logistical steps involved. By starting early, understanding the requirements of both India and your destination country and ensuring your dog’s health and safety are prioritized, you can have a smooth and enjoyable international travel experience with your furry companion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Travelling with Your Dog in India

Traveling With The Dog Without Proper Preparations

One of the worst and common mistakes made by dog owners is to neglect their pets and pack the bags without much thought of preparing for the journey. Dogs often find it difficult to travel, even for a shorter period of time, if they are not used to being on long voyages or in unfamiliar places. In order to avoid inconveniences, it is very important to do the following:

  • Exercise Your Dog Before the Journey: Taking your dog on a long walk or allowing them to burn off some energy before travel can help them settle down during the trip. A tired dog is generally more relaxed and less likely to be anxious or restless.
  • Get Them Used to the Carrier or Crate: If your dog is travelling by air or train, make sure they are comfortable in their carrier or crate well before the journey. Start with short trips around the neighborhood to help them adjust to the confined space.
  • Offer Psychological Support Products: Pack things they are used to such as their preferred comforter, stuffed animal or even sleeping sheets. The smell and the essence of these belongings can help in diffusing restlessness and creating a sense of safety.

Misunderstanding Airline/Train Policies

Every transport has its own rules regarding the traveling of pets. Not checking and adhering to these policies beforehand can cause unwarranted shocks or even prevent one from travelling with their pet. Some of the common errors made are:

  • Not Knowing Pet Size and Weight Limits: Airlines and trains often have restrictions on the size and weight of pets allowed in the cabin or the cargo hold. Always verify these limits to avoid confusion at the time of boarding.
  • Not Confirming Cabin or Cargo Travel: Different transport modes have varying rules on whether pets can travel in the cabin or must go in the cargo hold. Make sure you are aware of the travel restrictions, so you can prepare accordingly.
  • Booking Last-Minute: Pet-friendly spaces on flights and trains can be limited. Always book early to ensure your dog’s place is secured and to avoid added stress close to your travel date.

Not Having the Right Health Certificates and Documentation

Documentation is key when travelling with pets, especially if you’re travelling by air or to different states in India. One of the most common mistakes pet owners make is not having the required health certificates or other necessary documents.

  • Missing Vaccination Records: Certain vaccinations, such as rabies, are required for pet travel. Without these, you may not be able to board the flight, train or even be permitted entry into some hotels. Always keep a copy of your dog’s updated vaccination records.
  • Not Getting a Health Check: Before travelling, especially for long distances, take your dog to the vet for a health check. The vet can confirm that your dog is fit to travel and provide the necessary certificates, which may be required by airlines or other transport providers.
  • Forgetting About Inter-State Rules: If travelling by train or car to a different state, check if there are specific health or vaccination requirements for pets in that state. Some regions may have additional regulations in place.

Not Researching Pet-Friendly Accommodations and Services

While travelling, it’s important to plan ahead and research pet-friendly accommodations and services to ensure a comfortable stay for both you and your dog.

  • Assuming All Hotels Are Pet-Friendly: Not all hotels or accommodations in India allow pets, so it’s important to book a pet-friendly place. Research and confirm that your hotel or resort welcomes pets and has the necessary amenities (like designated pet areas, walking trails, etc.) for a comfortable stay.
  • Not Checking Pet Amenities: Some pet-friendly accommodations charge extra for cleaning or offer limited pet services. It’s important to know what is included in the booking and whether additional services, like pet-sitting or walking, are available at an extra cost.
  • Not Considering Nearby Pet Facilities: Ensure that the area around your accommodation is dog-friendly. Look for parks or dog-friendly cafes where you can take your dog for a walk. In larger cities, there may also be pet salons, grooming services or veterinary clinics nearby, which could be helpful in case of an emergency.

Other Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not Considering Your Dog’s Anxiety: Travelling can be stressful for dogs, particularly if they are not accustomed to new environments or long journeys. Consider your dog’s anxiety levels and talk to your vet about calming solutions, such as calming sprays, medications or familiarisation techniques.
  • Ignoring Weather Conditions: Extreme heat or cold can affect your dog’s comfort and health during travel. If travelling in hot weather, ensure your dog has access to plenty of water and avoid long exposure to the sun. In colder weather, make sure your dog is protected from the cold, especially if they have short fur.
  • Forgetting Emergency Contact Information: Always carry your dog’s identification, such as a collar with a tag or a microchip, with up-to-date contact information in case you get separated.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure a much smoother and more enjoyable travel experience for both you and your dog. Whether travelling by air, train or road, a little preparation goes a long way in making your trip stress-free and enjoyable.
